For many, summer often brings with it ideas of spending time at a beach, amusement park, or some other tourist attraction. However, in the less-to-than-ideal economy in which we leave, saving money has become more important than ever. But you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have fun outside during the summer. Below are four ways you can enjoy the outdoors without spending a lot of money.
1. Camping: Go camping with friends, family, or yourself. You can get all the gear you need for a minimal amount of money, but you might be able to borrow everything you need from someone you know. Most campsites are relatively cheap, and many are free. Do a Google search for state parks or campsites around your area. Start a fire, roast some marshmallows and hot dogs, and enjoy the simplicity of being outdoors.
2. Fishing: This is another great, relatively cheap activity that you can do with friends and family. You can buy plenty of cheap, quality tackle at your local Wal-Mart, or if you know someone who fishes, you might be able to borrow everything you need. Just make sure you have a fishing license. Ask around or search the internet to find some places where you can fish, and go have fun!
3. Hike: It doesn’t get much simpler than hiking. You don’t really need much in terms of supplies, although you do want to make sure you take plenty of water and food. Check with your state parks or search the internet to find trails near your location. Pack a lunch and have a picnic, take a camera and photograph nature, and just enjoy the great outdoors.
4. Kayaking or Canoeing: While buying a kayak or canoe might be a bit expensive, renting one usually isn’t. Many state parks offer full day rentals for around $5. Plan to spend a day out on the water. Pack a lunch for a picnic, bring a fishing rod, or just sit back and drift.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors without spending a ton of money on gas, lodging, and other expenses. These are just a few. Try out some of these activities, or be creative and figure out another way to enjoy the beauty of nature.
